Structure
On 1 April 2012 Cornerhouse merged with Manchester’s Library Theatre Company to create GMAC (Greater Manchester Arts Centre Ltd).
Cornerhouse, the Library Theatre Company and Cornerhouse Publications are trading names of Greater Manchester Arts Centre Ltd (GMAC), a registered charity that is a company limited by guarantee. GMAC is managed by a board of trustees, chaired by Jim Forrester.
The Cornerhouse and Library Theatre Company brands will continue until the move to the new venue, and distinct programmes will also be maintained until this time, with the Library Theatre Company performing productions at The Lowry as well as site-specific work. A brand for the new organisation is currently being developed and will be launched in the autumn.
Cornerhouse employs 30 full time staff and 20 part time staff and has a pool of around 35 casual staff. A list of our full and part time staff is available here.
Our Café Bar and catering activities are provided by external catering partner, Wardley Ltd.
More information on the Library Theatre Company can be found here.
Partnerships
Being Manchester’s leading contemporary arts centre means more than just producing innovative and engaging work. It is about connecting, sharing knowledge and building productive relationships with a wide range of organisations from the city, the wider region and beyond.
At the heart of what we do are our collaborations with artists, academics, educational establishments, cultural institutions, young people, community groups, councils and many other stakeholders, which increase the reach of our work and the quality of our programme.
Cornerhouse is a key part of several well-established regional and national networks, such as the Cross-Artform Venue (CAV) network and Visual Arts Galleries Association (VAGA), taking responsibility for several initiatives that develop a dynamic platform for contemporary art, film and media across the UK. We also have a great track record of successful partnerships with many of the region’s universities, spanning research, education, visual arts, film and events.
Cornerhouse is part of Plus Tate, a network of 18 leading visual art organisations, which supports the development of the visual arts across the UK by sharing practices and programmes to increase public value and to broaden and deepen engagement in modern and contemporary art across the country.
In recognition of the high quality digital training sessions Cornerhouse delivers for teachers, Apple made Cornerhouse the first non-academic Regional Training Centre venue in the UK. This support has helped us to continue to provide free digital training for teachers across the North West, helping them to better engage pupils in the classroom through the use of digital media.
We work closely with regional venues, festivals and professional bodies, such as the Manchester Museums Consortium, Contemporary Visual Arts Manchester, the Contemporary Art Society (North) and the Association of Independent Film Exhibitors. All these partnerships play a key role in establishing the city as the most energetic and exciting cultural hub in the North West.
Our film programme is delivered in partnership with Curzon Cinemas, London’s leading independent cinema chain.
Funding
Cornerhouse is revenue funded by Arts Council England North West, Vision + Media, the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities, Manchester City Council and Arts Council England. We have an income of £2.3 million, around 60% of which is earned from cinema box office, trading, fundraising and sponsorship.
