Alex Cox season

From Thu 6 to Thu 27 February 2003
When Liverpool-born Alex Cox gave up law in favour of filmmaking, contemporary cinema gained one of its most idiosyncratic and articulate directors. From L.A.-set, punk sci-fi thriller REPO MAN to the Liverpool-set adaptation of 16th century play REVENGERS TRAGEDY, an Alex Cox film is always inventive, intelligent, and engaging. Whether made in the U.S., Mexico, or the U.K. his films deal with contemporary issues, employing and subverting an array of genres, always with a dose of humour. Besides his filmmaking prowess, Cox is also a knowledgeable aficionado of world cinema, as witnessed by his entertaining and informative introductions to BBC's Moviedrome. To celebrate the release of REVENGERS TRAGEDY we offer this brief season, affording the opportunity to see a range of Cox's films, including one never released in this country (DEATH AND THE COMPASS).
