La Fille Coupée en Deux

(The Girl Cut In Two)

Synopsis

Legendary French director Claude Chabrol returns with a trademark twisted psychological thriller set amid the apparently idyllic French bourgeois society.

Young and successful TV presenter Gabrielle (Ludivine Sagnier) is lusted after by two very different men: Charles, a 50-something renowned author and Paul, the young, aristocratic and troubled heir to a pharmaceutical fortune. When Gabrielle falls for Charles, a ménage-a-trois tale of love, sex and revenge unfolds.

Reviews

"A study of innocence and experience, purity and perversion" The Guardian

"This is one of Mr. Chabrol’s strangest films, but he still makes a ripple in his ocean." Andrew Sarris, The New York Observer

"Chabrol, who is often called the French Hitchcock because of his intricate thrillers, is approaching the big 8-0, yet he continues to do quality work, as shown by La Fille Coupée en Deux. May he never cease." V. A. Musetto, New York Post

"It's cynical business as usual for Claude Chabrol, who offers plentiful style and psychological finesse, [...] in his latest jaundiced and sophisticated entertainment. [...] La Fille Coupée en Deux has the typical trappings of a Chabrol thriller, although it would be more accurate to call this a melodrama of manners with a dark streak of social satire." Jonathan Romney, Screen International
