A film about the transforming power of love: an angel renounces pastoral care of Berlin’s sad and lonely (and the immortality that goes with it) to find love with trapeze artist Marion. Wenders, equally smitten with actress Dommartin, injects palpable yearning into what, in Peter Handke’s screenplay, looked set to be a film about loneliness.
