Asia Triennial Manchester 11 Film Programme

Sat 1 Oct 2011 – Sat 26 Nov 2011

All screenings will start at the advertised times without adverts and trailers

For the second Asia Triennial Manchester Festival, we present the very first accompanying film programme. This series of features, short films and special events includes eight UK premieres, plus a retrospective season of award-winning Filipino director Brillante Mendoza’s work.

Director Brillante Mendoza is the first Filipino to win the coveted Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Renowned for a hyper-realist style that utilises the latest in lightweight cinema technology, his films depict the harsh social realities of the contemporary Philippines and tell compelling stories of ordinary people coping in extraordinary situations. Previously an Art Director for television commercials, Mendoza moved into the field of feature filmmaking in 2005, making his debut with The Masseur. Since then he has become one of the most internationally acclaimed directors on the international film festival circuit.

The entire festival programme explores the ATM11’s themes of time and generation through contemporary cinema from across East and South East Asia. On the surface, many of these works are primarily concerned with the life experiences of the old (Lola, Gallants and Poetry) and the young (Hotel Black Cat and Under the Hawthorn Tree) but each film also contemplates the protagonists’ struggles between the compliant and the dysfunctional, the public and the private.
