The Descendants
15- Alexander Payne
- In English
- 115 mins
Following the phenomenal reception of his 2004 hit Sideways, Alexander Payne returns with a mature feature that masterfully blends tragedy and comedy. Clooney plays Matt King, a somewhat awkward lawyer who is consumed by his work and more importantly by the King family’s ancestral land dealings. When tragedy strikes and his wife is injured in a boating accident off the coast of Waikiki, Matt realises that he hardly knows her or their two daughters and is forced to re-examine his past and embrace his future.

REVIEWS
Alexander Payne's bittersweet reflection on family and grief is a drama of unusual nuance and maturity, with George Clooney eager to play the fool to outstanding effect. [...] It lingers, spawns thoughts, connections, as a great film ought. Let's just hope we don't have to wait another seven years for the next one. ****
The Guardian
With Payne, every beat counts. As the film's soundtrack deftly blends traditional and modern Hawaiian music, Payne provokes timeless questions about race, class, conscience and identity. Payne's low-key approach only deepens the film's intimate power. Want a movie you can really connect with? The Descendants is damn near perfect. *****
Rolling Stone
George Clooney responds magnificently to Payne’s creation of a dad out of his depth. [...] A thoughtful, generous-spirited work. Few films have captured so perfectly our awkward reactions to grieving that may be inappropriate – or merely human. ****
