“If it’s a funeral, let’s have the best funeral ever”
On April 2nd 2011, New York band LCD Soundsystem played their final gig at Madison Square Garden. Frontman and singer-songwriter James Murphy had made the conscious decision to disband one of the most celebrated and influential bands of its generation at the peak of its popularity, ensuring that they would go out on top with the most ambitious concert of their career. The near four-hour extravaganza did just that, moving the thousands in attendance to tears of joy and grief.
From the directing partnership behind Blur’s No Distance Left to Run, Shut Up and Play the Hits is both a narrative film documenting this once-in-a-lifetime performance and an intimate portrait of Murphy as he navigates the lead-up to the show, the day after, and the personal and professional ramifications of his decision.
The sold out screening on Tue 4 September will be followed by a live broadcast Q&A with James Murphy, directors Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace, and Hot Chip and LCD Soundsystem guitarist Al Doyle, chaired by Edith Bowman. The encore screening on Sun 9 September will include the same Q&A, pre-recorded.
