Coronation Street alumni Katherine Kelly (who played the much-loved Becky McDonald), the League of Gentlemen’s Steve Pemberton and Sophie Thompson head up the cast in Oliver Goldsmith’s classic 18th century comedy of manners She Stoops to Conquer.
Hardcastle, a man of substance, looks forward to acquainting his daughter with his old pal’s son with a view to marriage. But thanks to playboy Lumpkin, he’s mistaken by his prospective son-in-law Marlow for an innkeeper, his daughter for the local barmaid. The good news is, while Marlow can barely speak to a woman of quality he’s a charmer with those of a different stamp. And so, as Hardcastle’s indignation intensifies, Miss Hardcastle’s appreciation for her misguided suitor soars. Misdemeanours multiply, love blossoms, mayhem ensues.
One of the great, generous-hearted and ingenious comedies of the English language, Goldsmith’s She Stoops to Conquer offers a celebration of chaos, courtship and the dysfunctional family.
This performance will be certificated “As Live” and the content has not been viewed by the BBFC. There is no official age restriction but Cornerhouse recommends certificate 12A.

REVIEWS
Fresh, spirited and often blissfully funny. ****
The Telegraph
The great period comedies have either been neglected or indifferently revived of late. So it is a joy to see Oliver Goldsmith's 1773 classic back at the National after a 10-year gap. Although understandably many eyes will be turned to Coronation Street's Katherine Kelly, Jamie Lloyd's production is a collective success which leaves the theatre echoing with the sound of the audience's happiness. ****
