Showing as part of Anthony Burgess and Cinema

Anthony Burgess’s father Joseph played the piano in Manchester cinemas and music-halls in the 1920s, and performed an accompaniment to Metropolis “twice nightly and thrice on Saturdays”; Burgess himself repeated the feat many years later. Fritz Lang’s science fiction classic was a hugely important film to Anthony Burgess and it is not difficult to imagine how he was influenced by its dystopian vision of the future. We are pleased to screen this ground-breaking film in the reconstructed version that restores footage that had been missing for decades.

This screening will be followed by a free informal discussion led by staff from the International Anthony Burgess Foundation.
