Into The Abyss: A Tale of Death, A Tale of Life

  • Werner Herzog
  • In English
  • 107 mins

The latest film from Werner Herzog continues the director’s forays into the documentary genre with his trademark auteur flair. Focusing on two prison inmates who were sentenced for a triple homicide over ten years ago, Herzog combines emotionally-charged interviews with period news and police footage, exploring how the murders affected both the victims and the perpetrators alike. A delicate piece that is sure to spark debate.

A grisly death row documentary filled with operatic levels of tragedy – and unexpected humour… Into The Abyss leaves you startled by life. ****

Why aren’t you guys doing the satellite Q&A with Herzog on Tuesday that most other art house cinemas are screening? Seems like a missed opportunity.

Our programme schedule’s been particularly busy this week, with the Chinese Film Forum Symposium today and the live screening of NT: Live’s She Stoops to Conquer tomorrow, so unfortunately we weren’t able to fit this one in.

If you’re interested in filmmaker Q&As, our next one is with Adam & Paul actor and writer Mark O’Halloran on 30 April, which might take your fancy. Here’s the link:

This was a real missed opportunity. No offence to the Chinese but Werner Herzog is a world renowed and Oscar nominated Director. Anyone who is remotely interested in real life film would want to hear him speak. I travelled to Picturehouse in Liverpool and it was worth the effort.
