ARTIST'S TALK/ PHIL COLLINS

AND Festival logo

Cornerhouse and Berlin Biennale are delighted to present this talk with leading artist Phil Collins, who will talk about his past and future projects, including one that will bring him back to Manchester in 2010. His works, often investigating popular culture and the media, have been shown extensively across the world. Utilising participatory processes and tackling complex socio-political issues with both humour and dignity. Projects include they shoot horses (2004), a seven hour disco-dance marathon made in Palestine, and the return of the real (2005-7), a project with former reality TV participants in Turkey and the UK. Other projects are diverse yet connected by a sense of community, for example his work the world won’t listen (2004-7) features Smiths fans in Colombia, Turkey and Indonesia, soy mi madre (2008) explores the world of Mexican telenovela, and why i don’t speak serbian (in serbian) (2008) looks at the relationship between language and memory in ethnically divided Kosovo.

His new film, shot with former teachers of Marxism-Leninism in Russia and DDR, will feature at this year’s AND Festival, and is a collaboration between AND Festival, Berlin Biennale, Cornerhouse, Berliner Künstlerprogramm / DAAD, Film and Video Umbrella and Shady Lane Productions. Artists Beyond is an initiative of the 6th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art (11 Jun - 8 Aug 2010).

Phil Collins was born in Runcorn, UK and graduated from the University of Manchester. In 2006 he was nominated for the Turner Prize.

Artists Beyond is the prelude to the 6th Berlin Biennale, which is funded with support by the European Commission. Its aim is to engage artists into a dialogue with the local public of the places where they live and work. Upon invitation from Berlin Biennale curator Kathrin Romberg seven artists have already begun to produce their contributions. The central concern of Artists Beyond is to open up the process in which the artworks are currently being created for the Berlin Biennale to the respective local public. With diverse events the project offers insights into artistic research and work and enables a participation in the creative process as well as an exchange between audience and artists at the site of their production.

The Berlin Biennale is organised by KW Institute for Contemporary Art and funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation.
