Cormac Conway will produce a classroom preparation pack that teachers can use in advance of the study morning to equip students with vocabulary that will be used within the film and post-screening exercises.  This study morning will include three elements: an introduction to the themes and key vocabulary in  The King’s Speech; a full screening of the film; and a  post-screening interactive study session. After the screening, students will discuss their understanding of the film and express their opinions on the film, its characters and events and will debate themes such as: duty and responsibilities; overcoming adversity; the problems in using language; and friendship.

Led by Cormac Conway, ESOL and Modern Foreign Languages Curriculum Manager at Manchester Adult Education Services.

Screening: The King’s Speech 12A

Dir Tom Hooper / Australia, GB 2010 / 118 mins

Based on a true story, The King’s Speech stars Colin Firth as Bertie, the stammering prince thrust into the limelight when his brother King Edward VIII abdicates from the throne. Overcoming his fear of public speaking becomes crucial to deter Bertie’s cynics, so he turns to the talents of eccentric speech therapist Lionel Logue.
