Taking place during Refugee Week, this study session will introduce students to new vocabulary, utilising the 1960s set film An Education to compare and contrast Britain in the 1960s with modern day Britain as we know it. Students will discuss some of the subjects raised by the film including the changing position of women in the UK through the decades and relationship issues, such as age gaps between partners. The session will also explore the differing views of education that the main character Jenny expresses at different points in the film.

Screening: An Education 12A

Director: Lone Scherfig, UK, 2009, 99 mins

An acclaimed coming of age drama written by Nick Hornby. Jenny is a diligent student in 1960s suburban London whose life is transformed by the arrival of David, an urbane and witty suitor nearly twice her age.
