Halima Cassell’s show is part of the Parampara Programme, a series of exhibitions by British South Asians. This, the third in a series of six, will feature existing as well as newly commissioned work by SHISHA. Cassell’s work is rooted in Islamic geometric patterns with bold African influences. Fusing her Asian background with her fascination for African pattern work and passion for architectural geometry, the works are intense yet playful, structured yet creative, and compelling in their originality. They combine strong geometric elements with recurrent pattern and architectural principles. She concentrates on simple forms in order to maximise the impact of the complex surface pattern in combination with heavily contrasting contours. Features an introduction by Fareda Khan (SHISHA) and foreword by Sarah Teale (Bolton Museum and Art Gallery) and Paramjit Kaur (Independent Curator). Accompanies the exhibition at the Bolton Museum and Art Gallery, January – March 2005.
