Psycho Buildings: Artists Take on Architecture will mark the 40th anniversary of one of the world's most architecturally unique exhibition venues, the Hayward. This exhibition brings together the work of artists who create habitat-like structures and architectural environments that are mental and perceptual spaces as much as physical ones.
The works in this exhibition revisit and reanimate the history of modernist design, while reminding us that built spaces can be defined in social, political, psychological, physical and aesthetic terms – definitions that simultaneously apply to much of the work in this exhibition.
At the same time, this immersive form of art reveals the crucial role of physical experience in our aesthetic encounters, emphasising what must be experienced rather than merely seen, and actively engaging each visitor as an adventurous participant in the work.
