In February 1999 Claude Heath undertook a two week residency at the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds. Heath produced a series of drawings taken directly from sculptures. Having never seen the sculptures before, he worked blindfold, simultaneously tracing the object with one hand whilst drawing his responses with the other. As he familiarises himself with his objects, he experiments with a range of techniques and media, producing long scrolls of paper. He repeats these journeys as the surface of each object is mapped onto the page. Heath records his ideas onto audiotape, and an edited version of his commentary is reproduced here, along with his line tracings of each of the sculptures he mapped. When compared with the original sculptures, they clearly illustrate the way in which he makes sense of objects through touch.
