Occurring every five years, the British Art Show is the most ambitious survey of new and recent developments in art from the UK. Organized by Hayward Gallery Touring, British Art Show 6 opened at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, and tours to Manchester, Nottingham and Bristol. Curated by Alex Farquharson and Andrea Schlieker, the exhibition includes sculpture, painting, film, performance and public projects by 50 artists and artists’ groups. This documentary contains interviews with exhibiting artists Tonico Lemos Auad, Ergin Çavuşoğlu, Gordon Cheung, Marcus Coates, Doug Fishbone, Hew Locke and Heather & Ivan Morrison together with the curators. The artists talk candidly about their practice and work in British Art Show 6 and both they and the curators comment on the role of survey shows, the exhibition’s themes, the notion of British art and artists, politics and internationalism. The film also features installation footage of the exhibition at BALTIC. Directed by Gary Malkin.
