New Natural History is a comedy of manners, a study of small events and intriguing incident which both subverts and adds to our view of the world of nature. Val Williams This is a major new book examining the complex relationships that exist between humans and animals. It is published to coincide with the exhibition New Natural History, curated by Val Williams and Greg Hobson, at the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television in Bradford, 17 September – 14 November 1999. Although it is a survey of contemporary photography, New Natural History is also mindful of history. Most contributors were born and brought up in the postwar years, decades during which our attitudes to the natural world have changed radically. Their experiences are part remembered, part fiction, part fact. New Natural History is about consumption of the natural world and how we use creatures pleasure, for food, and consolation.
